Bitumen tank trailers

The bitumen tank is a type of tank semi-trailer intended for transportation of bitumen and other dark oil product (e.g., fuel oil residue and gas tar) as a part of a combination vehicle with tractor units.

Isothermal metal container is mounted on the frame of a cargo semi-trailer usually with two or three wheel axles. It is important to know that bitumen is a substance requiring maintenance of a specific temperature during transportation, which influences most of the constructive features of bitumen tanks. When the temperature drops below certain point (depending on the type, it can be in the range of +100°C to +170°C), bitumen loses its fluidity. To preserve the necessary characteristics of the substance for a long time, neither thermal insulating layer in the walls of the reservoir, nor "steam jacket" is enough. Therefore, the special semi-trailers are also equipped with additional heating elements (fixed diesel burners), which allow maintaining stable temperature at about +200°C.

Loading and unloading operations can be carried out either by filling through a hatch in the top of the tank and draining by the force of gravity, or with the use of a gear bitumen pump installed on the semi-trailer. Other noteworthy equipment includes sensors for temperature and volume of the substance in the tank.
