USED CHASSIS TRAILERS: FEATURES AND CHOICE STRATEGIES
Chassis trailer is the basic design of automobile and tractor trailers, which is the basis for mounting various types of bodies.
Among the basic elements of the construction of the chassis trailer, one should distinguish, first of all, the undercarriage, the frame and the hitch. The undercarriage may have one or more wheel axles and a shock absorption system, as well as often a braking system. In some cases (when it comes to the so-called «active trailers»), the chassis trailer can be also equipped with leading axle, operating by means of power shaft, hydraulic or pneumatic drive gear.
The frame of the chassis trailer is a strong metal structure (depending on the manufacturer, it can be either welded or fastened with lock bolts), which constitutes the carcass of the trailer and requires installation of bodies. On the front part of the frame, there is a drawbar which provides an opportunity to hitch to the towing vehicle (usually by means of «hook-and-loop» mechanism). Moreover, most of the trailers (especially those that are designed for freight traffic on the network of public roads) are equipped with the light signaling system («stop» and «turn» signals, etc.).
Chassis trailers can have different dimensions and weight capacity, and they are most often capable of carrying any kinds of bodies, both open and closed - loading platforms, flatbed, tilt and hopper bodies, boxes, booths, tanks, etc.
