A reach stacker is a type of special equipment, a variety of loaders designed for cargo handling and intermodal operations, as well as for stacking freight containers.
From the structural point of view, reach stackers (otherwise called telescopic container handlers) are self-propelled rubber-tired vehicles equipped with a telescopic boom, on which a special gripper for containers is mounted. The basis of the power unit is a turbodiesel internal combustion engine, and the boom is driven by a hydraulic system. The maximum load capacity of some telescopic container handlers can exceed 45 tons.
Moreover, besides handling containers, reach stackers can be involved in operations with other types of goods as well. In this case both standard container grips and other working bodies (for example, specialized clamps for pipes) can be used. Because a variety of attachments can be mounted on these vehicles, they can be indeed considered multi-functional vehicles rather than only pertaining to their primary narrow field of application.
All of the above, together with the possibility to handle containers at high speed and extreme mobility, allowed reach stackers to firmly occupy the niche in the market of cargo handling equipment.
