Semi-trailer is a variety of trailers, which connects to the towing vehicle through its front part with the use of the fifth wheel mechanism.

Semi-trailers usually have two or three axles, one or two out of which may be retrievable (they are used only when transporting cargo with large weight, in other cases they are in raised position, which allows additional savings on wheel tire wear). There are special extensible legs, which help keeping the semi-trailer in the horizontal position when detached from the tractor unit. The semi-trailer is connected to the tractor unit with the use of a support platform located in front part which has a pivot that penetrates into in the saddle of the fifth wheel mechanism.
