Tank truck is a specialized type of truck bodies designed for transport and temporary storage of various liquids, liquefied and bulk cargo. Specific types of tank trucks include, for example, fuel trucks, bitumen transports, milk transports, fire trucks, grain tank trucks, cement tank trucks, flour transports, gas trucks and so on.

Modern tank trucks are typically manufactured with the use of stainless steel or aluminum alloys because these materials have a high degree of corrosion resistance and, as a consequence, are much simpler and more reliable in operation. In the cross-sectional view, the tanks may be circular, elliptical or "suitcase"-like. Moreover, according to the specifics of design, one can be distinguish mono- (single-) and multi-sectional tanks. In the latter case, the tank has several compartments isolated one from another, with separate hatches, ventilation valves and fill/drain paths. Another design feature is presence of breakwaters inside the tanks, which increase stability in case of partial fill.

Due to the fact that some cargo requires special temperature conditions during transportation, the tanks can be heat-insulated and have a "steam jacket" (a special hollow layer in the walls, through which the hot steam passes) and other heating devices.

Depending on the purpose, tank trucks can be equipped with additional devices - for example, various pumps, volume and pressure sensors, dispatched substances meters, etc.
