PICK-UPS: MAIN FEATURES AND CHARACTERISTICS
Pick-up is a type of a car body, which combines constructive features of a passenger car and of a light truck.
Most the pick-ups are light trucks built on the basis of passenger cars or off-road cars. In the front part of their body, there is a driver's cab with a single row of seats (models with two rows are produced less often), and in the back there is a loading platform. However, it should be noted that North American manufacturers also produce significantly heavier medium-duty pick-ups.
In the classical specification, biaxial pick-ups have rear-wheel drive, although the modern models more and more often have all-wheel drive (front-wheel-drive variations are much rarer). Open loading platform may in some cases be complemented with a special hard top (removable or non-removable), which turns it into a closed box.
Combining the strengths of both trucks and passenger cars with a relatively low cost, pick-up have firmly occupied the place of the main "trusty beast" in small farms around the world (except, perhaps, for the post-Soviet countries, where these vehicles have just started to gain popularity). In the last decade of the twentieth century, the modifications intended for sports and tourism also started to spread.
