Refrigerator semi-trailer is a type of closed body semi-trailers whose main task is transportation of goods sensible to temperatures (food products, medicines and so on).

The necessary temperatures in the working volume are sustained due to two complementary factors - isothermal features of the body itself and presence of a refrigerating machine. The heat insulating features are ensured by the specifics of its structure - the walls of the van are made of sandwich-panels and have a layer of a special thermal insulating material (usually foam plastic, urethane plastic foam or foam polystyrene), the doors are closed hermetically.

Presence of special refrigerating machines allows not only to sustain stable temperature inside the body, but also to change it in either direction, and even to freeze the products directly in the van.

Depending on the model and modification, the refrigerating machines may be mounted either on top (on the roof) or on the bottom (under the body), and be powered either from the tractor's engine or from its own separate combustion engine. Freons are usually used as the coolant in such machines. Some refrigerators may use systems based on eutectic modules ('cold accumulators').
