Dolly trailers

The dolly trailer is a type of open-body cargo trailer used as the link between a tractor and a semi-trailer.

There are cases when it is necessary to deliver various semi-trailers to the areas which are not suitable for movement of standard tractor units on the chassis of serial trucks, such as in off-road conditions, on the fields, etc. A logical solution to this situation is to use various tractor vehicles as the towing capacity. But there is a significant difficulty related to this solution. As it is known, semi-trailers should be concatenated to the towing vehicle by means of the fifth wheel mechanism, whereas most tractors are connected to the trailers with the use of «hook-and-loop» system.

To solve these specific problems, special dolly trailers were developed, which are equipped with the fifth wheel mechanism (identical to that of the tractor unit) and a special drawbar intended to be connected to a tractor or a truck. Such trailers usually have a chassis with one or two wheel axles.

Dolly trailers can not only effectively tow any semi-trailer in off-road conditions and thus avoid firming of agricultural soil as a result of using standard tractor units, but also to form road trains of the configuration "truck - semi-trailer" to transport goods on the public roads network.
