A trailer is a type of cargo vehicles designed to transport different types of cargo being a part of a road train. Road trains can be formed in different ways: tractor unit - trailer, tractor unit - semi-trailer - trailer, truck - trailer. Unlike the case of the semi-trailers, the weight of the cargo is distributed only on the trailer's own axles, and concatenation with the tractor unit is exclusively for applying the pulling force to the trailer. These vehicles are typically not equipped with their own engine - with the only exception of the so-called two-section road trains. Furthermore, some models of active road trains may also have trailers with the mechanical or hydraulic drive of the wheels from the engine of the tractor unit.

In the most general way, all trailers can be divided into three basic categories - open-body, closed-body and tanks. Within each category, there is a wide range of different types of vehicles, whose structural features arise from the characteristics of the transported goods. For example, the walls of the body may have a thermal insulating layer to maintain a stable temperature of the cargo (isothermal trailers and tanks), freezing (refrigerators) or heating (bitumen tanks) equipment. Additional equipment of various models may include systems of sensors (temperature, pressure, volume, etc.), as well as loading mechanisms (cranes, ramps, skids, hydraulic lifts).
