Container chassis

Container chassis is a truck designed to transport standard 20-foot (TEU) shipping containers on general use roads.

Maximum weight capacity of container chassis ranges between 18,000 and 35,000 kg. The vehicle chassis usually have two to four axes, the most common axle arrangements are 6x2 and 8x4. The frame of such truck is adapted for the transportation of containers, tank containers, as well as other transport boxes and cargo whose dimensions correspond to the standard twenty-foot equivalent - about 20 feet (6.1 m) long and 8 feet (2.44 m) wide. Standard height is between 4 feet 3 inches (1.3 m) and 9 feet 6 inches (2.9 m), and the most common height is 8 feet 6 inches (2.59 m).

The maximum total weight of the loaded container in a standard TEU should not exceed 24,000 kg, which, given the large weight capacity of many vehicles, makes it possible to use container chassis as a part of combination vehicles with container chassis as a trailer.

The use of standardized sizes of containers transported gives the opportunity to conduct the immediate transshipment between the truck and marine or rail vehicles, which significantly saves time and simplifies the loading-unloading operations. Moreover, if necessary, the contents of the container can be loaded or discharged in the same manner as conventional cargo van.

Some container chassis bodies are additionally equipped with loading ramps and with hydraulic systems of dump discharge, which makes these vehicles an even more universal solution for various transportation tasks.
